The Different Types of Glass That Can Improve Your Home

When installing windows into a home or business, it can seem a bit crazy how much the prices of glass can fluctuate. Glass is glass, right? The short answer, however, is that not all glass is created equal, and certain types of glass have distinct benefits and advantages over normal glass. Here are a few of the types of glass you can install into your windows and what differentiates them from other types of glass.

Obscured Glass: This type of glass has a pattern rolled into it, which prevents someone from looking through it clearly. Light can still come through, but the picture gets a bit foggy. This is a great option for bathrooms because natural light can get in, but people can’t see in and out.

Tinted Glass: Tinted glass is any glass that has a color added to it. Most tinting is black, which is able to prevent some light as well as harmful UV rays from coming inside. The glass is still clear and easy to see through, but it can tone down the harsh rays of the sun.

Insulated Glass: Insulated glass works the same way as normal insulation; different layers stacked together preventing heat transfer. Insulated glass has several layers of glass with space in between, which means the heat is not able to get inside during the summer, and the heat doesn’t leave as easily during the winter. This means a home or office can be at a comfortable temperature for a lower energy cost than standard glass.

Next time you are looking at which type of glass to use in your windows, make sure to spend some time looking at the different types. While the cost may be a bit higher for special glass, the benefits can greatly outweigh the costs.
