First, inspect your basement for cracks, condensation, or other places where water can enter. This is because roots that rot can serve as a channel for water towards the foundation, rather than away from it. If water is coming into the foundation, identifying the source is essential to remedying the problem and waterproofing your home.
Third, consider the volume of water. For minor volumes of water, a sealant may be enough to keep water from coming back in. Larger basement leaks may be the result of multiple factors, including large amounts of precipitation, your local water table, and the soil around your home.
