If you’re like most of us, you’ve probably heard about catch basins, but you’re not quite sure what they are. Well, a catch basin is simply something that’s very useful for removing water from roadways, but it can also be installed as part of the plumbing services for homeowners.
Catch basins remove surface water from roads and direct it into storm drains. Usually, they have a curb inlet or grate that captures large amounts of sediment to prevent it from entering a drainage system. While the catch basin is able to trap sediment, the actual amount will depend on the size of its sump.
There are various types of catch basins on the market. A low-profile one has a shallow well that’s only 1¾” and has a grate on the top. Most, however, are much bigger – they can be as deep as 30”. The latest material in use is polystyrene.
A catch basin is very handy for getting rid of areas of stagnant water. If you have a continual problem with puddles, but not sufficient space for a culvert, then a catch basin will do the trick. When you have one professionally installed by plumbing services, the water will be diverted through a perforated drainpipe, so it can drain away. You can help the environment by providing extra protection to a catch basin through the use of a product that prevents contaminants from entering groundwater.
If you think you could benefit from one of the lesser-known plumbing services of catch basin installation, contact a qualified local plumber.
