Steel fabrication is the process of turning a material such as metal into a final product through different methods. Sometimes these methods can even be used in tandem to create a final product, because multiple processes may be necessary. Here is a short list of 5 of the processes that could be used in steel fabrication.
- Folding: Putting bends into sheet metal to turn it into something is called folding. The process can be done with a brake press then takes the sheet metal and pinches/push it into the desired angle.
- Machining: When excess material is removed, usually involving spinning, it is considered machining. Things like drilling, turning, and milling all involve shaving off the excess metal from spinning.
- Punching: The process of pushing out a shape in a material with force is punching metal. Sometimes done mechanically to punch out larger amounts of metals, it can also be done by hand with much smaller punches.
- Welding: Most people know what welding is. It is the joining of two separate pieces of metal using heat and pressure. There are many different types of welding and welding processes, but that the chosen welding process changes depending on the fabrication.
- Casting: Melting down the metal and pouring it into a shape is called casting. From here it is hardened and able to be used as a final product. This is a great way to fabricate large amounts of things because it means you can use a single mold to make a lot of products by pouring it.
There are so many different techniques and processes for steel fabrication, and these are only a few of them. Make sure to call a professional if you need a steel product of any kind.
