We all understand that time and the elements will begin to take a toll on our roofs, and that eventually, some roof repair will be needed. But, what really constitutes a need? And when do you know if it is just a minor problem, or something that might be sign of larger problems that need to be taken care of right away?
When it comes to your roof, it is important to remember the job that it does for your home and to not put things off before they become a larger problem. While minor repairs can be done easily and with small cost to you, waiting and allowing for problems to fester can lead to must costlier repairs, or possibly the need for roofing replacement. Here are a few problems that you should look for or times when a roofing inspection should be completed to assess damage and needs for roof repair:
- Missing shingles. This is usually due to high winds or to damage from debris, such as a fallen tree branch. But if just one or two is missing, do you really need to worry about replacing the shingles right away? The answer is yes. While just one missing shingle isn’t anything to go into a state of emergency about, know that the protective layers beneath can quickly weather without the shingle on top and eventually your window of time will be up before some water damage and leakage will begin to take place.
- Damage from hail or debris. Your roof is meant to withstand the weather, but if your area has experienced large hail or if you have had any large branches fall on your roof, it would probably be wise to call for an inspection. What you need to look for are dented or cracked shingles, which can affect the integrity of the shingle if the damage is extensive. Also, if you suspect any cracks in your roof due to storm damage, call a professional immediately. This is important for insurance claims, and for stopping the growth of further damage.
As you can see, most roof repair needs are caused by storms. General weathering of your roof over its lifetime from the sun and standard wear and tear will eventually lead to the need for a new roof, but that is usually not needed for 15-20 years if you have kept up with these more minor roof repair needs. If you suspect you have a problem, call a local roofing company to come and give your roof an assessment.
