“I’m in the market for a new heat pump. I want to find one that saves as much energy as possible, but I’m not really sure what to look for. What do you suggest?”
Heat pumps already use less energy than many other heating and cooling devices, but some heat pumps are more efficient than others. Here are several features that make heat pumps more efficient:
- Dual-mode motors and compressors that adjust according to the level of cooling or heating required.
- Desuperheater coils that heat water by reusing waste heat. On an RCC (Reverse Cycle Chiller) heat pump, this is achieved through a heat reclaimer, which also utilizes the pump’s additional ability to heat water in mild winter weather.
- Scroll compressors – these are more efficient, quieter and last longer than conventional compressors.
Although you’ll find the above-mentioned features on a more expensive heat pump, they compensate for the initial financial outlay by enabling the pump to save energy and work more efficiently for the duration of its life.
