Time and again, glass windows need replacement if they are to serve their purpose adequately. Glass replacement may look easy, but it’s not.
Cutting yourself, breaking the glass, and wrong installation are some consequences of installing a new glass without the knowledge.
If you’re a beginner, here are some pointers to get you on the right track:
- Remove All the Putty
It’s nearly impossible to fit in a new glass when putty from the old glass window is still in place. If the putty has dried up and getting rid of it is proving to be a task, soften it up with some heat and use the sharp point of a chisel or knife to remove the bits of putty around the frame.
If necessary, clean the frame to remove any remaining putty debris.
- Uninstall the Old Glass
This is the tricky part, especially if the window is broken. With a little extra care, you’ll be alright.
For chipped or cracked glass replacement, ensure that you wear gloves. Then, remove the bits of glass individually.
- A Little Putty Works
Don’t be generous with putty. Once you’re done clearing the old debris, use a thin layer of putty around the frame before installation.
- Oil Older Frames
An old frame can’t hold a new window. For a more straightforward glass replacement exercise, use Linseed oil on all parts of the wood surrounding the frame and allow it to soak. The oil helps to make the putty last longer.
