If you have a bee infestation in your home, you will need to call bee removal experts for help. Many bee removal companies use humane methods to capture the bees and relocate the colony to a more appropriate location rather than just killing them, which is better for the local environment. In this article, we’ll go over how this approach to bee removal works so you know what to expect.
- Fumigation – The first step in bee removal is to fumigate the bee colony. In this case, the word fumigate doesn’t mean to use airborne pesticides to kill the bees, but instead to pump smoke into the hive to calm them down and make them drowsy. This makes the bees less likely to attack when the bee experts approach the hive. (Bee removal experts also wear protective gear, just in case some bees are still)
- Location of the Queen – Once the bees are nice and calm, the bee keeper will inspect the hive to locate the queen. (This process will likely require removing part of the wall to expose the hive, which is another reason why the fumigation process is so important.) Then, the queen will be removed and placed in a new box hive. The rest of the colony will follow her scent, gradually moving into the new hive as well.
- Removal of the Comb – As the bees make their way to their queen in the new hive, the bee removal experts will remove the honeycomb and place it in the new hive as well. This will make the relocation process go faster, since many bees will cling to each comb and go with it to the new hive. In addition, it’s important to take the comb because it contains the colony’s honey supply, which is their food source.
- Cleanup & Relocation – Lastly, bee removal experts will clean up the old hive cavity and make sure there is no wax or honey residue left behind. They will then take the new hive away to its new home.
