Although large trees are beautiful, there may come a day when the trees on your property are too big for your preferences or your neighbourhood. Before they outgrow their allotted space, you may wonder how you can safely reduce the tree to an acceptable size. An arborist can recommend two methods, depending on the tree in question:
- Tree Topping—Tree topping is a process that removes large branches from the top of a tree and leaves only lateral branches. Most arborists will agree that tree topping is not a viable option for controlling tree size on a long-term basis. Rather, it is a suitable method if you plan to remove the tree in the near future.
- Crown Reduction—This is one of the most common methods arborists rely on to control tree size and maintain an aesthetically-pleasing shape. More ideal than tree topping, it involves reducing the tree’s foliage while preserving the crown’s general structure. Your arborist will likely remove limbs located on the top of the tree canopy to reduce the height but do so in a way that they grow back again properly.
Working with an arborist is the best way to determine if tree topping or crown reduction is the best method for reducing the size of your trees. If you’re not sure where to find a local arborist, try asking your neighbors for recommendations. Best to get an arborist that has previous experience with properties in your state/city.
