Heavy civil construction will require some heavy equipment, but to an untrained eye the machines may all look the same. Here are some of the types of machines used in heavy civil construction.
- Dump Truck: This machine is very recognizable because of the simplicity of the design. It is a large truck with a large container on the back that can haul large amounts of material.
- Asphalt Paver: An asphalt paver features a big container for the material that leads it down to a screed which lays it down.
- Roller: A roller features a very large wheel which rolls anything it runs along flat. This can be used on dirt, gravel, sand, asphalt, or any material that needs to be smoothed and flattened.
- Excavator: An excavator has a large bucket, typically with prongs on it, on the end of a long arm. This allows for careful maneuvers of the bucket, which can be used to dig up and move material, demolish, mine, or many other things.
- Trenchers: These can come in many sizes, but their main purpose is to create trenches. Trenches are used to lay down any number of cables or lines underground, so these are useful at any number of job sites and job sizes.
- Boom Truck: A boom truck is a large truck with a crane on the bed. The crane can be used as a lift for people, or a hook can be attached to lift heavy things. There are many possibilities for a boom truck, but they are usually used to lift things with the crane or life people.
Heavy civil construction applies to many jobs, and every job is different. This means there are tons of types of heavy equipment used, and this list only covers a few of the major tools. There are so many types of machines used in construction.
